Midwest Horse Talk

OK now I get to finally add a diary to all and not feel silly. Actually I'm amazed at how this all turned out since I met her. I'm amazed because when I went to Simons Paint sale I had absolutely no intentions to get a mare. I have always thought they were bitchy,,So all day long I eye balled certain geldings. I've always thought geldings were more even tempered. Never once saw her working in warm up or paid attention.
I had a few fave geldings I watched and talked to owners/riders and was going to consider bidding. Then each one that came in I didn't like how the bidding was going or something kept telling me --don't bid.
Girlfriend asks me to stay(it was windy and snowy) and I was like OK,,poop now I gotta sit thru an hour or so of mares in catalog.Went to pee later and came back and there in auction ring was this mare who really knocked my socks off. VERY pretty jog and calm lope and awesome leg controlled type on loose reins. I looked at catalog and saw who her sire was and was like Holy DooDoo. Bidding was very slow and low and I loved her way and raised my hand.
Yep I won an awesome mare for $1950,who I feel is worth way more.

OK first week home she is a snot when I try to catch her in pasture. Thats ok,I'm a stranger to her.She needs to learn we can bond. When I do get her she is really nice, walks calm and no bad habits. When riding she thought she was supposed to go fast and she had to learn from me that I'm calm and want her calm and I don't want her to think she has to constantly work.

I discovered in riding she is very very sensitive to leg controls, thats good. I've ridden out in huge fields with her in all gaits and she is learning now what "Walk" means too.
A milestone for us was other day(Sun.) and today.
Sunday I came out to work Carlin,my yearling, he's a pro to me and then I put him back out to romp. I walked up to Roxy, who doesn't walk away from me now. Probably because she learned I carry treats in my pocket for her. LOL. Well it was late and I had no intention to grab her and just wanted to pet her and feel if she was warm under blanket. I turned and walked away and the lil booger is following me. VBG!! Oh wow I thought,,she's actually now following me,,this is soooooo good. So I took her to roundpen and she worked awesome free longing and continued to follow me whenever I wanted. YAY,,big YAY--that was a milestone .

Today was yet another smile to me when I went out to stables and she was in and actually whinnied when she saw me.
I'm happy as due to weather and inconsistancy to be able to be out there and I have only had her 3 weeks.
Sara, the barn owner, also commented how she really likes Roxy's personality.
OK done for now.

There is something sooooo special about a mare that you just dont get with a gelding.

Don't you just love it when you get that first whinny. Like, "yay!! you're here." I remember the first time Dash talked to me. I just about cried I was so happy. It's like the final approval. Only now he talks constantly. I love it though. Great story Sue, I'm so glad you two found each other.

Oh yeah,,sorry for the long intro blog,,but she really is sooo nice behaved. What makes it nice riding is she is a great trail horse outside of barn. Nothing phases her. And then all around she has such a sweet temperament,,is getting goofy personality out now,,loves her treats and sweet sweet. Not mare typical attitude I always heard about.
My girlfriend at sale had trailer brought just for me and ended up with a gelding there. Poor Sara, barn owner ,when we come home with 2 horses she has to accomodate for.
But it's funny Roxy and the gelding have become best buds out in this 40 acre pasture of other horses. And now stalled side by side--I had to laugh tonight. Both are goofballs together. Our stalls in this new barn Sara bought have stalls where horses can hang their heads out over door,,way cool.
Yep,,gonna be fun no matter what weather now. And thank god they are in process now of building indoor arena.
